The identification of pets increases the chances of finding their owner if they are lost or stolen. RossHelen
An awareness campaign on the identification of our pets is launched from June 12 to 18, 2023. The goal: to identify their master when they get lost.
Through this system, many lost pets are returned to their owners. The I-Cad company, manager of the national identification file for domestic carnivores, is launching the 5th edition of the week of identification of dogs, cats and animals NAC to make French people aware of the challenges of this mandatory act since 2012.
Why implant a microchip in your dog, cat or ferret?
The goal of the 5th edition of this campaign is to “give an identity to pets . (…) THE animals do not have an identity card. The chip is there to allow him to testify to his identity and to be attached to his master.commented Wednesday Pierre Buisson, president of Icad, during a press conference.
“Identification is the first step in responsible dog and cat ownership. It is essential in the event of loss, fugue or of flight he recalls. “(…) Our message is addressed above all to owners of cats. They have an important place as pets and are numerous among the animals lost. (…) Identifying them makes it possible to find their master when they get lost”, he says.
This event therefore aims to inform the public of the benefits of identification and to encourage owners of cats and dogs to have their animals identified.
In 2022, 1,764,734 pets identified
In 2022, 1,764,734 pets were identified (by microchip or tattoo):
According to Pierre Buisson, we notice a “slight decrease compared to 2020 and 2021, but in clear increase for 5 years (+ 39%)”. “Last year there was a decrease in willingness to adopt animals but those adopted are increasingly identified”welcomes the veterinarian.

79% of dogs and 64% of cats found thanks to their identification
Today in France, Icad files list 9 million dogs and 7 million cats. “It is estimated that 98% of dogs are identified but only one in two cats is chipped”he laments.
The identification is made by a professional: breeder, pet store, shelter and in particular associations. In particular, it makes it possible to limit abandonment by affirming the link between the dog, the cat and its master.
In 2022, 88,202 animals were declared lost by their owners, including 66,493 cats (+9% in one year) and 21,628 dogs (+8% in one year). 79% of dogs and 64% of cats found their owners thanks to their identification number.
A more intuitive website
In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, this week, dedicated to animal welfare, will unite all professionals in the pet industry. And to promote this campaign, a new website dedicated to animal identification has been created: identifier-mon-animal.fr
More intuitive and functional, the site has been designed for the general public, professionals (veterinarians, municipalities, beneficiaries, breeders and associations) and teachers.
The SPA which manages the exit of animals, once identified, and whose 63 shelters are almost saturated with 6,410 animals (end of March 2023), will open its doors this weekend to potential new masters, hoping to make room for new arrivals of summer.
