Subscribing to mutual insurance for dogs: Good or bad idea

Animal insurance, the guarantee of a peaceful future

Did you know that a household spends an average of €943 per year on their pet and that these expenses are largely consumed by food and veterinary costs? (Source Ipsos 2022). A significant budget that could be reduced with the subscription of specific insurance for dogs. In fact, animal insurance, based on a prevention system similar to “mutual funds for humans”, allows you to benefit from better coverage of veterinary care with reimbursement of between 60% and 100% and a annual ceiling between 1000€ and 2500€.

Insuring your animal in good health, a good idea?

If the monthly payments may seem high for a healthy animal (count between €9 and €20 per month – either the price of your telephone plan or that of your Netflix subscription) in the event of a major glitch you could quickly fall back on your feet.

Indeed, with an increase in the price of consultations of almost 43% over the last 2 years, going to the veterinarian for a consultation quickly costs €50. By opting for animal insurance, halve your vet costs without sacrificing your animal’s health. Proof that prevention is an underestimated economic argument!

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF MY PET INSURANCE?

The price of your insurance premium varies according to different criteria:

  • The dog’s breed, age, size
  • Known clinical history, genetic or chronic illnesses can also vary the price balance.

To help you find your way around your budget, insurers generally offer 3 types of coverage:

  • The economical formula that covers care up to 70% max
  • The intermediate formula for coverage estimated at 85% max
  • And the reinforced formula that has the best guarantees and offers support up to 100%

Are there any warranty exclusions?

Certain disclaimers of warranties may exist. These can be directly related to your animal and its medical particularities or integrated into your contract (waiting period and deductible).

Among the exclusions of guarantees are:

  • The age of your animal: a dog that is too young (less than 3 months) or too old (more than 8 years) will find it difficult to find insurance to protect it. This does not mean that there is no insurance for older animals, but that the contract must be started before your animal reaches this age limit.
  • A dog who is sick or known to have chronic or genetic diseases (Pugs, Labradors, Cavalier King Charles) could see his financial support reduced.
  • Some so-called “routine” care may also not be covered by animal insurance.
  • The waiting period applied to your contract can vary from 48 hours to 9 months depending on the type of treatment, be careful
  • Finally, the deductible applied to your contract could vary the degree of reimbursement of the costs incurred.
